In the world of sports, having the right facilities can make all the difference. This is especially true for cricket, where practice and preparation are key to success.
Today, we delve into the exciting project at Judd Grammar School in Tonbridge, where a brand new 10-lane cricket facility is being constructed. This facility will not only enhance the school's cricketing capabilities but also serve multiple purposes throughout the year.
The Need for Modern Cricket Facilities
Judd Grammar School has seen significant growth over the past decade, expanding by 50%. This increase in student numbers has necessitated the need for better sports facilities. Previously, the school's cricket practice areas were outdated and insufficient for the growing number of students interested in the sport. A decision was made to invest in a new facility that would cater to both cricket and other recreational activities.
Choosing the Right System
The decision-making process for selecting the right system was critical. One of the major considerations was the multi-use nature of the facility. After extensive research, the team decided to go with a single carpet throughout the area. This choice was influenced by the desire for a seamless surface that could handle various sports while also ensuring durability.
The pedigree of the provider was another essential factor. The chosen provider has a background as a professional cricketer with international experience, which gave the school confidence in the quality of the installation.
Designing a Multi-Purpose Space
One of the key goals for this project was to create a multi-purpose space. While the primary function of the facility will be for cricket practice during the summer months, it is also designed to be used year-round for various activities. The retractable net system allows for flexibility in use, ensuring that the space can accommodate different sports and play activities even in winter.
Project Time
The construction of the facility is expected to take approximately six weeks, weather permitting. The project is structured in phases:
• Week 1: Site preparation and moving materials.
• Week 2: Arrival of materials and stones, beginning the build-up of one side of the land.
• Subsequent Weeks: Installing fencing, laying stones, carpets, and finally, the net system.
This systematic approach ensures that the project remains on track and is completed efficiently.
Durability & Longevity
Investing in a facility of this nature also implies a focus on longevity. The system is designed to last between 20 to 30 years, with a stone base that mimics the balance of a clay wicket. The carpet is expected to last approximately 7 to 10 years, while the net systems are projected to endure for about 5 to 6 years. This ensures that the facility will serve the school well into the future, providing a reliable space for cricket practice and other activities
The Finished Product
Fast forward seven weeks, and the results are impressive. The completed facility is a 40m by 35m artificial area dedicated to cricket practice, featuring ten lanes that are 35m long and 3m wide. During the winter months, the space will also accommodate hockey and other recreational activities, showcasing its versatility. The area is fully fenced with a four-meter fence, and kickboards have been installed to enhance the overall aesthetic and functionality of the space. The net system is scheduled for installation in April of the following year, completing the project.
Feedback from the School
The initial response from the school has been overwhelmingly positive. The facility not only enhances cricket training but also provides a valuable space for various sports throughout the year. The head of the cricket program expressed excitement about the new facility, emphasizing its role in improving overall sports offerings at the school.
